  1. When do I register my child for Upward Basketball?

Upward registration begins September 1st and will continue until each division is full, or midnight on October 15th.  Register EARLY—divisions fill quickly! As divisions become full registrants will be placed on a waiting list. Registrants on a waiting list are not guaranteed a spot in the Upward program, but every effort will be made to accommodate as many registrants as possible.

  1. How do I register my child for Upward Basketball?

Online registration is highly recommended and will be available throughout the entire open registration period. Online registration can be accessed at: http://www.upward.org/leagues/491876050/Basketball if you are not able to complete online registration, print and complete the registration form available on Upward website at http://upwardcny.org/forms/.

  1. What forms of payment can I use?

Registration is considered complete only when a completed registration form and payment have been received. Payment by credit or debit card directly through online registration ONLY is highly recommended and will guarantee placement into the program (or on the waiting list if the division is full). Registrants may opt to pay in person at Northside Church by cash or check (made payable to Northside Church). Registrants choosing this option MUST submit payment with the registration form or it will not be accepted.

  1. How much is the registration fee and what is it used for?

Registration for the 2017-2018 season is $85 Basketball; after October 1st, the cost is $95. Cheerleading is $75; after October 1st, the cost is $85.   The registration fee covers the operating expenses of running the league, uniforms, and the end-of-season closing ceremony.

  1. Now that I have registered my child, what is the next step?

Everyone must attend one basketball evaluation. They will take place at Northside Church as follows:

5th – 7th Grade (Boys/Girls) Monday, October 16th, between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

8th – 10th Grade (Boys Only) Tuesday, October 17th, between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Kindergarten – 4th Grade (Boys/Girls) Saturday, November 4th, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Please note the average evaluation time is 45 min, so please come between the hours stated above.

  1. What if my child cannot attend an evaluation?

If you do not attend an evaluation, you will not be guaranteed a spot and will be placed on a waiting list. Every participant MUST attend an evaluation date.

  1. What happens at the evaluation sessions?

Evaluations are not Tryouts.  Evaluations are a way of gathering objective data on the skills of each athlete.  Evaluations are meant to be informative for the families and fun for the athlete as we incorporate dribbling, shooting, and agility frills.  All athletes and their parents or guardians will attend a short orientation which will provide important information for the season. In addition, participants will be fitted for uniforms and have their height recorded.

  1. What happens following the evaluations?

We assign coaches and begin creating teams based on the evaluation scores. Team rosters and coach assignments are not received until after mid-November. Please be patient as we take the time to create teams that are well-balanced based on all team members skills, as well as developing practice times and locations.   We are anticipating close to 700 players across all divisions (Basketball & Cheerleading), so this process can take considerable time.

  1. What if I need to cancel my registration?

Prior to December 1st you can cancel your registration and receive a full refund.

10. When will I receive team assignments?

Team assignments will be provided to coaches prior to the first practice the week of December 4th.  The coaches will contact you to introduce themselves, confirm your team, and inform you of your first practice date and time during the week of November 27th – 30th.

  1. Can I request that my child plays on the same team with friends?

We cannot honor requests to play on the same team with friends or requests for specific coaches. The Upward registration system automatically creates teams based on a combination of evaluation scores and experience in order to create an equal playing field for the participants. With potentially 700 players, it is not possible to accommodate multiple friend requests or rearrange the teams without disrupting this balance or complicating the process of building team rosters. We ask for your understanding and hope that you see the value in how this system works. It is a great opportunity for all of us to make new friends.

  1. Where are the practices held?

  1. When is practice held?

The first practice week is scheduled for December 4th and December 11th. Your coach will provide you with your practice schedule once it has been determined.

  1. When and where are the games played?

The first games are scheduled on Friday, January 5th, 6th & 7th.  Games will be held at Northside Church.

  1. Will the games always be played at the same time?

No. Games are played at various times.

  1. When is the full season schedule available?

We do our best to get the schedules to you as soon as possible after the teams are formed, and you will have them before the first games on January 5th 2018.  We will post on our website www.upwardcny.org & Facebook.

  1. How will I know if a game or practice get cancelled?

When challenging weather happened we submit the cancelation of practices and games on Channel 9 NEWS.  We will also post cancelations on our Website & Facebook.

  1. Are the players required to wear uniforms?

Yes. Uniforms are included in your registration fee. Each child will be given a practice t-shirt, reversible jersey, and shorts. The children will be sized for uniforms at the evaluation session in November and will receive them by their first practice.

  1. What are “Team Parents”?

In order to provide your team’s coaches with the time that they need to focus on your children more effectively, each team will be required to have a “Team Parent.” This person will serve as a team coordinator in which they will handle communication, snack schedule, picture coordination, etc. We ask that each team has a volunteer to be Team Parent in order to ensure accurate team communication throughout the season. You will be able to volunteer by reaching out to your coach after team assignments are made.

  1. Is there a team photo available?

Yes will will have Team Photos…more details will be provided later in the season from the coaches and posted on our Website and Facebook page.

  1. Is there an awards celebration?

Yes, we will hold the awards celebration on Sunday, March 18th at Northside Church.  More details will be provided later in the season from the coaches and posted on our Website and Facebook page.
